It is hard to believe that it was only eleven days ago that we defeated the Senate Republicans’ latest attempt to repeal the ACA and strip millions of Americans of their health insurance. Clearly, this is the chaotic world we’re living in: a new emergency hits every few days.
We knew it would be a long haul, and it is. The Trump administration and GOP-controlled Congress are a disaster. But we have to keep fighting back. It is the only way to limit the damage they can do and protect our democracy.
Here are a few actions you can take, plus resources and articles that may be of interest. To keep abreast of fast-moving events and the local Indivisible response, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Stop the Tax Scam!
Up next from the GOP is their big tax rebate for the wealthy—which they propose to pay for by cutting Medicare and Medicaid. Check out these resources from Indivisible, including call scripts. Then, be sure to call your Members of Congress!
Support Gun Control
Even as the country is in shock following the massacre in Las Vegas, the NRA is working to advance their agenda in congress, with a bill in the senate that would mandate “concealed carry reciprocity,” weakening New York’s strong gun laws. (So much for states rights, eh?) In the house, there is a preposterous bill to legalize silencers that will make guns even more deadly. Learn more at Everytown.org.
If you are able to make a contribution, former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg will match every donation to Everytown.org, the gun control organization he founded.
Voter Registration Deadline this Week!
October 13 is the last day to register to vote in New York’s upcoming elections. This is also the deadline to switch party affiliations in order to vote in the 2018 primaries, so make sure you are registered—and tell your friends and neighbors.
Politics is Local
If you are looking to get more involved in local elections, be sure to check out New Kings Democrats, a Democratic political club working for a more progressive Brooklyn.
Join Ditmas Civic on October 17 for a Community Night on the theme “Know Your Rights.”
Red Districts Need You!
If you are looking to make a difference in areas that are not as solidly blue as our own, consider going to Virginia to canvass for Danicia Roem on October 21(sign up here). Closer to home is the New York’s 11th District in Staten Island (and part of Brooklyn!) where you can help ensure that they vote blue in the coming elections.
